Sclerotherapy: The Process

Sclerotherapy is a straightforward and highly effective treatment for spider veins. A safe sclerosing solution (called a "sclerosant") is gently injected into the targeted veins. This solution causes the veins to shrink and close, allowing them to naturally fade and disappear over the following weeks. It's one of the simplest, most reliable, and virtually painless options available today, with most sessions completed in just 15-30 minutes—no downtime required. Get ready to enjoy clearer, more comfortable legs with minimal effort.

Why continue living with spider veins when sclerotherapy can make them vanish for good? We invite you to schedule a consultation to learn more about this quick, non-invasive treatment. In just one short session, you can enjoy smoother legs—free from visible spider veins—with no downtime and minimal, temporary side effects. Take the first step toward renewed confidence today.

Sclerotherapy: The Treatment

When you come to our private Costa Mesa Office for treatment, it is important that you know exactly what to expect when undergoing sclerotherapy.

  • The area to be treated is thoroughly cleaned with alcohol.

  • With a virtually painless tiny needle, we inject a proven solution into the bothersome veins to safely close them, revealing smoother, clearer legs.

  • The targeted vein can no longer carry blood to the area; it is re-routed to healthy veins. Over the following weeks, the treated veins no longer function and slowly disappear.

Our patients tell us sclerotherapy treatments are not difficult to experience. When the solution is injected, you may feel sensations that include mild stinging or mild swelling.

Is Sclerotherapy a Safe Way to Treat Spider Veins?

You may have concerns about the safety of treating your spider veins—and that's completely understandable. To put your mind at ease, spider veins (also known as Telangiectasias) carry only a tiny amount of blood. Once treated, that blood naturally redirects into nearby healthier, deeper veins. This procedure poses no risk to your overall health or circulation. Say goodbye to worries and hello to smoother, more confident legs.

Advancements in Sclerotherapy Treatments

While sclerotherapy has been a trusted treatment for decades, today’s advanced techniques make it far more comfortable and patient-friendly than ever before. You can say goodbye to uncomfortable, unsightly spider veins in just 15-30 minutes—with no need to worry about a difficult or painful experience. Enjoy quick, gentle relief and smoother legs without the concerns of older methods.

Recovery From Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minor, minimally invasive treatment and does not involve recovery time; most patients simply go back to work or their other activities immediately after the treatment is complete.

To help speed healing, it is helpful to take walks every day. It will take several weeks for the treated veins to disappear completely. Wearing compression socks for 1 week after treatment generally speeds up healing time. Your individual treatment plan will be crafted once our specially trained Physician Assistant, Layla, has evaluated your condition.

Types of Sclerotherapy Solutions

If you have many spider veins, you may require more than one treatment to address the condition fully. Physician Assistant, Layla will determine your individual treatment plan after a private consultation during which she assesses your specific needs.

When treating the body for a cosmetic or physical issue, it is imperative that you have total confidence in your provider, and experience performing this treatment is important. If performed incorrectly, there is a risk of developing problems, including blood clots, inflammation, or being left with visible scars.

Side Effects of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a very safe procedure and carries very little risk, as opposed to more invasive and painful treatments such as “vein stripping.” The side effects that some patients experience may include:

  • Itchy sensation at the injection site

  • Veins may initially feel hard or lumpy, slowly dissolving over the weeks ahead.

  • You may experience slight bruising or a tender sensation at the injection site.

  • Some patients see tiny veins developing around the injection site, which slowly disappears without the need for treatment. It is simply the blood finding a new route.
