What is Regenerative Medicine?

Under the care of renowned podiatrist Dr. Ivar E. Roth in Costa Mesa, regenerative medicine specializes in the regeneration and repair of damaged foot and ankle tissues. This is achieved by addressing the underlying causes of foot-related conditions and treating the root source directly.

Treatments utilize the patient's own autologous stem cells or allogeneic stem cells sourced from donor birth tissues, such as umbilical cord or placental-derived mesenchymal stem cells, rather than relying on traditional medications. The goal is to restore mobility and enhance quality of life for patients suffering from chronic foot pain, injuries, and degenerative conditions.

WHAT IS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE IN PODIATRY?

STEM CELL IN DNA STRAND

Regenerative medicine focuses on harnessing your body's natural healing processes to repair damaged tissues in the feet and ankles. Unlike conventional treatments that mask symptoms, these therapies target the root cause of issues like tendon damage, joint degeneration, and chronic pain. Dr. Ivar E. Roth, with over 40 years of experience in podiatric medicine and surgery, specializes in regenerative options that promote tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility.

Stem Cell Therapy for Damaged Achilles Tendons and Other Foot Conditions in Costa Mesa

One of Dr. Roth's key regenerative treatments is stem cell therapy, ideal for conditions such as damaged Achilles tendons, ankle sprains, and osteoarthritis. We offer two advanced options:

  • Autologous stem cells: Harvested from your own body for a personalized, low-risk treatment.

  • Allogeneic stem cells: Sourced from donor birth tissues (such as umbilical cord or placental-derived mesenchymal stem cells), carefully selected and processed for safety and efficacy.

These injections deliver concentrated healing factors directly to the injured area, stimulating new tissue growth and faster recovery. Many patients in Costa Mesa experience reduced pain and improved function within weeks, avoiding invasive surgery.

PRP Therapy and Other Regenerative Options for Foot Pain Relief

In addition to stem cell therapy, Dr. Roth utilizes Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, where your blood is processed to concentrate healing platelets and growth factors. PRP is highly effective for:

  • Achilles tendon injuries

  • Non-Surgical Options for Big Toe Arthritis

  • Targeted Relief for Osteoarthritis in Weight-Bearing Joints

  • Ankle arthritis

  • Sports-related foot injuries

These minimally invasive treatments are performed in our comfortable Costa Mesa office, with little downtime.

The “Concierge Advantage” from Dr. Roth.

Dr. Ivar Roth here, reaching out personally to those exploring advanced options for foot and ankle healing. Over the past decade-plus, I've incorporated regenerative stem cell therapies into my practice, building deep experience and refined judgment on exactly when and how these powerful tools can best help restore comfort, function, and quality of life for my patients. Early on, I had the privilege of training and being mentored by the esteemed Dr. John Homan, MD—a highly respected sports medicine specialist in Newport Beach who has since retired. His insights helped shape my approach to innovative, tissue-repairing treatments.

In my concierge setting, I offer two primary types of stem cells, tailored to your needs and situation.

First, autologous stem cells—those harvested from your own body. If you're generally healthy and under 60, your own stem cells often remain robust and viable. I can gently access them from the hip or knee area using local anesthesia for comfort. A specialized trocar device is inserted into the bone canal to withdraw the concentrated stem cells, which are then immediately injected into the affected joint or tissue in your foot or ankle. The entire in-office procedure typically takes about 45 minutes. You'll walk out with just a simple bandage over each site, resume normal activities right away, and follow standard post-stem cell precautions. I'm proud to be one of the few podiatric surgeons in Orange County performing this autologous harvest and application directly.

The second option—and the one I use most frequently—is allogeneic stem cells from Wharton's jelly, sourced from the umbilical cord of healthy, screened afterbirth donations through a reputable lab. These newborn-derived cells are exceptionally potent, active, and viable, making them an outstanding choice for promoting regeneration in joints or tissues.

We determine the volume (in cc's) based on the size of the area being treated, and the cost reflects the number of cc's required.

What truly sets my Concierge Podiatry & Spa approach apart is the ability to combine both types when it makes the most sense for optimal results—creating a higher overall dose of regenerative cells. Because I perform these procedures right here in the office (rather than an expensive surgical center), there's already a significant cost advantage.

When we use both your own stem cells and the Wharton's jelly-derived ones together, I don't add any extra charge for harvesting and combining them—you simply pay for the purchased allogeneic cells, and you gain the full benefit of both sources working in synergy.

This kind of personalized, efficient regenerative care is part of why my practice has been a pioneer in true concierge podiatry since the beginning. If you're dealing with joint pain, tendon issues, arthritis, or other foot/ankle conditions that haven't fully responded to conventional treatments, I'd be honored to discuss whether stem cell therapy could be right for you.

Let's take the time to explore your options together—no rush, no compromise on quality.
